He died on 13 DEC 1915 in Palo Alto, San Mateo, CA.

His wife was Ailsy Ann Carter, who he married on 29 DEC 1878 in Monroe, Marion, IA. Their seven known children were Edith Elizabeth (1879-?), Evangeline (1881-1976), Mary Louisa (1883-?), Joseph Orland (1885-1956), Riley H (1887-1893), Murray "Earl" (1894-1979) and Merle Ruth (1896-?).

He had remarkable music talent. In 1867, moved to Iowa; had large farm w/ a Colonial house, 20 miles SE of Des Moines, IA. Moved to Palo Alto, CA, in 1899; owned a fruit range in Santa Clara Valley. Most of his children were educated at Stanford University.
