Note 1
Born in Bethel, Bath, KY, 1883. He moved to Davenport, Lincoln, OK in 1903; to Oklahoma City in 1905; to Edmond, OK, in 1917-18. RC was with Leeper Lumber Co for 7 years and Long Bell Lumber Co for 30 years (was Edmond, OK City Manager for 2 1/2 years (1941, 1942, 1943--dates per his own notes found in his 1961 daily journal)). RC worked at Long Bell Lumber Co., Edmond, OK, from 1911 to 1941, and was manager much of that time. His brother, Chester, worked with him. From December, 1942, to May, 1945, he was City Manager, Edmond, OK. Gossett Park (at University Drive and College Street, Edmond, OK--northwest corner of Central State University), named in the honor of RC, was adjacent to home, 403 E Lincoln, built by John Jessee Gossett & Wanda Beryl Long in 1951), (land for Park sold to City of Edmond by John Jessee Gossett--son of Robert Clyde--to City of Edmond, OK). Robert Clyde Gossett, Sr, with his family, lived at 406 E 5th St, Edmond, OK, until R.C. moved in with his son, John Jessee, in about 10/1967, when he could no longer drive his car. This was a difficult time for R.C. He died in a nursing home in Edmond, OK, October 25, 1976. RC is buried next to his wife, Pearle, and his oldest son, Robert Clyde Jr, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Edmond, OK. After John Jessee's death, the home at 403 E Lincoln (Edmond) was sold to Oklahoma Christian Home. The house was moved to near Guthrie, OK (in three pieces!) in 1999. Robert Clyde Gossett spent many years taking care of the 5-acre home of John Jessee Gossett--he loved the outdoors; he mowed, raked, pruned, watered, and cared for all the plant life. He maintained his own home for years until he moved in with John Jessee Gossett, son. He was known as "Pop" to hundreds (actually thousands) of college students (from Central State College/University); he took someone different to lunch every Sunday, and always had fried chicken to eat. He worked with the Wesley Foundation at the First United Methodist Church, Edmond, OK, for years--the college student church group. Per his own notes, he entertained at dinner, treats, shows, moved some students (2000 in last five years--1955-1960); he transported many to camp & meetings at other state colleges or wherever needed. He gave financial help to quite a number to get through college. RC was a member of First ME Church, Edmond, since 1918. He worked with youth in some capacity from 1900 on. He worked with youth of St Lukes Methodist Church, Okla City; was later superintendent of Mission Church Sunday School, Okla City. RC was superintendent later of First ME Church, Edmond, and served on the church board for a number of years, as trustee. RC worked with Provident Association in Okla City. RC was a charter member of the Edmond Kiawanis organized in 1926 (served as secretary for over 40 years).
