Mathias was born in 1798 in Berkeley Cnty, VA, the son of Matthias Gossett Jr. and Mary Garner.[Notes 1, 2]

He died in APR 1860 in Lawrence Cnty, OH.1

His wife was Jane Foster, who he married on 23 MAY 1823 in Jefferson Cnty, OH. Their ten known children were Elizabeth (1824-1897), John S. (1826-1864), Mary Elizabeth "Polly" (1830-1910), Matthias (1830-1915), Julia A. (1833-1903), Jane (1834-1926), Archibald (1837-1873), James (1838-1915), Hannah (1841-1903) and David Wiltz (1847-1930).
